Payment gateway selection should begin with customers, settlement needs and supported countries—not with the shortest integration tutorial. Paystack, Flutterwave and PayFast each serve overlapping but different business contexts.
Provider availability, fees and rules change. Always confirm current requirements on the payment provider’s official website before making a commercial decision. This guide focuses on the technical and operational questions a Laravel marketplace should ask.
Start with business eligibility
Confirm that the provider accepts businesses registered in your country and supports settlement to your bank. Review required identity and business documents, settlement timing, reserve rules and prohibited activities.
A gateway that offers a preferred payment method is not useful if your business cannot complete verification or settle funds reliably.
Map customer payment methods
List the countries and payment methods your buyers actually use. Card support alone does not describe the complete checkout experience. Local bank methods, mobile money and currency presentation may influence conversion.
Do not advertise a payment method merely because the provider supports it somewhere. Availability can depend on the merchant country, customer country, currency and account approval.
Compare integration architecture
A reliable Laravel payment integration normally includes four parts:
- The server creates or initializes a transaction.
- The customer completes the provider’s checkout flow.
- The server verifies the transaction directly with the provider.
- A signed webhook updates the order safely if the customer closes the browser.
Never mark an order paid only because a browser reaches a success URL. Verify amount, currency, transaction reference and final status on the server.
Make webhooks idempotent
Providers may deliver the same webhook more than once. Your handler must recognize an event or transaction that has already been processed and avoid granting duplicate downloads, credits or commissions.
Validate the provider signature before reading the event as trustworthy. Log the gateway reference and internal order identifier, but do not store full card information or secret credentials in logs.
Use sandbox testing deliberately
Create a test plan for successful, declined, cancelled and interrupted payments. Test duplicate webhooks, delayed webhooks, incorrect amounts and a customer refreshing the callback page.
Keep sandbox and live keys separate. Restrict access to production secrets and rotate them if they are accidentally exposed.
When Paystack may fit
Paystack is often considered by businesses serving supported African markets that want a focused local checkout experience. For TheBlue, the official Paystack integration packages the application-side connection, but the merchant still needs an approved Paystack account and valid configuration.
When Flutterwave may fit
Flutterwave may be considered when a business needs a broader combination of supported African markets and payment methods. Confirm the exact capabilities of your merchant account and desired currency. The Flutterwave integration for TheBlue connects the platform to the provider’s payment flow.
When PayFast may fit
PayFast is commonly evaluated by South African businesses seeking familiar local payment options and settlement. The PayFast integration for TheBlue is intended for this operating context, subject to the provider’s current approval and account requirements.
Choose with an operational scorecard
Score each provider on business eligibility, supported customer methods, settlement, refunds, dispute handling, reporting, webhook reliability, documentation and support. Include fees, but do not let a small fee difference outweigh dependable settlement or a better customer payment experience.
Many businesses should launch with one well-tested gateway before adding another. Multiple gateways increase choice, but they also increase reconciliation, support and security responsibilities.
